Few details survive about this 1895 glass negative titled simply "Volunteer," and its attribution to the Detroit Publishing Company rests on the style of the title and its catalog number rather than a signed credit. The 8 by 10 inch plate cracked through the center, a flaw that shows how fragile these early negatives were. The Detroit company sold large numbers of views during the 1890s, many made for travel and commercial markets. The plate reached the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
