A syce was a stable servant, usually a groom who walked, washed, and tended the horses of officers and officials in India and nearby British colonies, and the title names that role rather than a particular place or person. The record is thin: it gives a September 1897 date, an 8 x 10 inch glass negative, and a Detroit Publishing Company number, and it notes that the attribution rests on the style of the title and numbering. Like many of the company's late-nineteenth-century glass plates, the picture was made for sale as a souvenir view of far-off peoples and occupations, so it reflects how Western buyers of the period were shown colonial life.
