The record gives this view only as "Grayling," dated August 1, 1890, but the name most likely refers to Grayling, Michigan, a lumber town on the Au Sable River in the northern Lower Peninsula during the state's logging boom. The glass dry-plate negative is 8 by 10 inches and carries a Detroit Publishing Company number, though the catalogers note that the attribution rests on the style of the title and numbering rather than a signature. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado, a route that reflects how such views traveled between collections. Its large format and early date make it a useful record of the period's commercial landscape photography.
