Its title, "Uvira and Emerald," pairs two place names, though the record does not say what either refers to, and the attribution rests only on the style of the title and numbering. The negative is an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate dated June 16, 1896, and carries Detroit Publishing Company number 021978. That company built a large body of American views from the 1890s into the 1920s, often sold as souvenir prints. This plate reached the Library of Congress through a 1949 gift to the State Historical Society of Colorado, which points to a Colorado origin, though the record does not confirm where the scene was made.
