The glass negative names the vessel Tranquilo, a Herreshoff yacht, though the catalog title spells it "Tranquillo." The Herreshoff Manufacturing Company of Bristol, Rhode Island, was one of the most admired American builders of racing and cruising sailboats in the late nineteenth century, and its yachts drew attention from sportsmen along the Atlantic coast. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made the negative, was a commercial photography firm whose views of American places and people are now held by the Library of Congress. The picture's maker is not confirmed, since the attribution rests on the style of the title and the numbering.
