The record gives only the title *Ariel*, which does not say whether the view shows a place, a vessel or a person, so its date is the firmest starting point. The glass negative was made on August 11, 1894, at 8 by 10 inches, a large format that gave commercial photographers sharp detail. The Detroit Publishing Company catalogued it as number 021906, though its attribution to that firm rests only on the style of the title and numbering. The negative entered the collection as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado, which suggests a Colorado connection.
