Titled "Syce," a word borrowed from British India for a horse groom or stable attendant, this glass negative is less a portrait of a single event than a record of the working people who kept horses in the 1890s. The date, July 7, 1897, and the notation "Riverside" on the plate point to a likely Riverside Yacht Club setting, though the attribution rests on style and numbering rather than a signed record. The negative belongs to the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely and whose large-format plates captured American places and everyday scenes in the decades around 1900. It came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
