Few sporting contests of the 1890s drew as much attention as the America's Cup, and this glass negative shows two of its contenders, the British challenger *Valkyrie II* and the American defender *Vigilant*. The 1893 series pitted Scottish-designed yachts against American design, and *Vigilant*, designed by Edward Burgess, won and kept the Cup in New York hands. The date and racing attribution are not confirmed by the negative itself, so they rest on the title's style and the number marked on the glass. The Detroit Publishing Company photographed landscapes and events across the country, and this 8-by-10-inch negative preserves the sharp detail of large-format photography from the period.
