The record ties this glass negative to a June 26, 1897 regatta, likely one held by the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club, a club founded in 1871 that raced on Long Island Sound. Catalogers attributed the plate to the Detroit Publishing Company based on the style of its title and the numbers marked on the negative, since no company number appears. Yacht races of that period drew large crowds of spectators, and the Detroit firm sold views of such scenes to travelers and vacationers. The plate came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift routed through the State Historical Society of Colorado.
