The subject here is the S.S. Octorara on its trial trip, a run a new steamship made before it was handed over to its owners to check speed, steering, and machinery under working conditions. The picture is a dry plate glass negative, the large-format medium that photographers in the 1910s used to record ships, ports, and industry. It was made on April 23, 1910, and comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that sold views of American places and people in the early twentieth century. The negative was later given to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949, which helps explain how a Detroit firm's view of a ship came to rest in a Colorado collection.
