The German cruiser Hertha was one of the foreign warships that took part in the Hudson-Fulton Celebration in New York in 1909, which marked the 300th anniversary of Henry Hudson's voyage up the river and the 100th anniversary of Robert Fulton's first steamboat run. Detroit Publishing Company photographers documented the fleets and crowds that gathered on the Hudson that autumn, and this glass negative captures the ship's naval presence during the parades and ceremonies. Such images are valuable for showing how the celebration brought foreign navies into the harbor as a display of international goodwill.
