Little is recorded about this steamship beyond its name, the S.S. Admiral, which the Detroit Publishing Company photographed on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative sometime between 1900 and 1910. Steamers of this kind carried passengers and freight on busy inland waterways in those years, and the company built its catalog on views of working vessels, waterfronts and travel destinations. The negative came to the collection as a gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949. Large-format glass plates like this one recorded far more detail than smaller films, so the image preserves a close look at the vessel of its era.
