Passengers bound for Europe passed through this gateway to the Holland America Line piers at Hoboken, New Jersey, a busy waterfront across the Hudson from Manhattan. In the early 1900s Hoboken handled a large share of transatlantic passenger traffic, and its piers drew both emigrants and well-to-do travelers. The image is a glass dry plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for photographing American places around 1900 to 1915, and its date of 1905 is only an estimate. The entrance and the crowds it would have held are the main things to notice.
