At the lower entrance to the Poe Lock in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, two freighters are named on their hulls: the *Howard L. Shaw* in the foreground and the *Thomas Adams* behind it. The lock, opened in 1896 and named for Army engineer Orlando M. Poe, lifted and lowered lake vessels between Lake Superior and the lower Great Lakes, which carried iron ore and grain through the rapids. The Detroit Publishing Company made this glass-plate negative in the years between 1902 and 1910, when its photographers traveled widely documenting American scenery, towns and industry. Shots like this one record both the engineering of the locks and the working ships that depended on them.
