Two sleek racing yachts, Columbia and Constitution, appear together here, captured in the trial races held in 1901 to choose the American defender for the America's Cup. Columbia emerged from those trials and went on to face Sir Thomas Lipton's challenger, Shamrock II. The picture was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers worked across the country in this period, and it survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass plate negative. Its catalog notes say the trial race is the likely occasion, which makes the image a useful record of the sailing rivalry that drew wide public attention at the turn of the century.
