The Columbia Building in Louisville, Kentucky, is the subject here, a commercial office block photographed as part of the Detroit Publishing Company's survey of American cities. The company, based in Detroit, sent photographers across the country in the early 1900s and sold their views as postcards, lantern slides and bound souvenir books. Its 8 by 10 inch glass negatives were large enough to record fine architectural detail, and the catalog date of 1906 places this view within the company's most active years. Louisville's downtown streets of that era show how business buildings were rising on the Ohio River city's commercial core.
