Security Mutual Life Insurance Company, a Binghamton firm, is the subject of this view of its headquarters in the Southern Tier of New York. The photograph dates to about 1905, when Binghamton was a busy manufacturing city whose shoe, cigar and metalworking industries drew workers and capital, and when insurance companies often built prominent offices to signal stability to policyholders. The image is an 8 x 10 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that documented American cities and scenery for commercial sale in the early 1900s. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
