Louisville was one of the great leaf-tobacco markets in the country around 1906, and this Detroit Publishing Company view shows the work that moved through it. Hogsheads, the large barrels used to pack and ship cured leaf, and horse-drawn carts and wagons are the features that set this scene apart from the city's other commercial pictures. The Detroit Publishing Company, which hired photographers to document American towns, rail lines and industries, sold these views as postcards and prints, so the image also records how a working warehouse district looked to the public at the time.
