The sloop *Columbia* was a racing yacht designed by Nathanael Herreshoff, and in 1899 it defended the America's Cup in waters off Newport, Rhode Island, against Sir Thomas Lipton's challenger, *Shamrock*. Newport was the summer playground of wealthy American families and a center of yachting, so pictures like this one record a sport that drew large crowds to the harbor. The Detroit Publishing Company made many views of such resort towns for sale to travelers, and this 8 by 10 inch glass negative from August 1899 still shows a break in its upper right corner, a reminder of how fragile these plates were.
