The photograph shows the two yachts Constitution and Columbia together on the water, a pairing that makes this image distinct from the many other Detroit Publishing Company views of sailing craft. In 1901, the two boats were rivals in the America's Cup, the premier yacht race of the era, and the record notes this view was probably taken during trial runs before the contest. Constitution, a Herreshoff-designed sloop built for the 1930s-era Cup challenge tradition, and Columbia, the defending champion's design, were both matched against British challengers in those years. The glass negative, one of the Detroit company's large-format plates, preserves the sharp detail of sails and hulls that make the rivalry easy to see.
