Two sleek racing yachts, the *Constitution* and the *Columbia*, are the subjects of this 1901 glass-plate negative, probably taken during trial races ahead of that year's America's Cup defense. Both were built for the New York Yacht Club's defense effort, and their contest drew wide newspaper attention on the East Coast. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American landscapes, towns and events for commercial sale, made the picture, and its large 8 by 10 inch format captures the fine rigging and sail detail that smaller cameras could not.
