Rather than a photograph of the ship itself, this is a copy of a painting of the frigate *Constitution*, made on an 8 x 10 inch glass negative by the Detroit Publishing Company, which reproduced artwork alongside its travel views. The vessel, launched in Boston in 1797, earned her nickname "Old Ironsides" during the War of 1812, when British cannonballs reportedly bounced off her oak hull in her victory over HMS *Guerriere*. Oliver Wendell Holmes's 1830 poem of that name helped rally public support that kept the ship from being scrapped, and she remains a commissioned vessel in Boston today.
