Rather than a building or a landscape, this glass negative records a sculpture of a woman beside a horse, displayed at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. The Corcoran, founded in 1869 and opened to the public in 1874, was one of the city's earliest art museums, and its sculpture halls drew visitors who wanted to see works in marble and bronze. The Detroit Publishing Company made such photographs of museum pieces and scenic views for sale to tourists and collectors in the years around 1900 to 1912, when the dating is based. The negative later passed through the State Historical Society of Colorado, which received it as a gift in 1949.
