Here the subject is an infant of the English Stuart royal family, shown in a painting the record knows only by its title, *Baby Stuart*. The image is a photograph of a reproduction rather than of the original canvas, the kind of copy the Detroit Publishing Company made of artworks for wide distribution around 1900. Portraits of royal children from the seventeenth-century English court, many linked to the circle of Anthony van Dyck, were popular subjects for such copies. The title and date come from a 1912 Thistle Publications volume, a reminder that the picture went on circulating in print long after the painting was made.
