Here the subject is a bird painting rather than a scene: this glass negative records a reproduction of a study by Louis Agassiz Fuertes, the American painter and ornithologist known for his accurate and lively bird portraits. Fuertes (1874-1927) worked closely with the Cornell ornithology program and illustrated many field guides and natural history books, so his paintings were widely reproduced in the early twentieth century. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made large numbers of commercial photographs of American and foreign subjects between about 1890 and 1924, copied the work for distribution as postcards and prints. The negative's title pairs a Chinese pheasant with the ring-necked pheasant, a bird that had been introduced across North America and Europe.
