Made inside the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., this glass-plate negative records a sculpture titled *Lioness*, displayed in a museum that had been open to the public since the 1870s. The Corcoran was founded by the banker William Wilson Corcoran as a public gallery of art. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced large numbers of views of cities, landmarks and institutions across the country, made the picture on an 8 x 10 inch plate, and its date of roughly 1900 to 1912 is based on a 1912 publication.
