Rather than a view of the shore itself, this record documents a painting: a photograph of a work signed by William Trost Richards, the American marine painter known for his detailed renderings of the Atlantic coast. Richards worked in a meticulous style influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites, and he paid close attention to sand, surf, and light. The Detroit Publishing Company issued photographs and color prints of American scenery and artworks around the turn of the twentieth century, and this image likely reached buyers through that trade.
