Few of the Detroit Publishing Company's Washington views focus on a single sculpture, which makes this lion stand out. It was photographed at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, which William Wilson Corcoran founded in 1869 as one of the capital's first private art galleries open to the public. The company's glass-plate negative, which measures 8 by 10 inches, was probably made between 1900 and 1912, a date based on a 1912 publication by Thistle Publications. The plate later came to the State Historical Society of Colorado as a gift in 1949, preserving a record of how the museum's grounds and collections appeared to travelers and publishers of the era.
