Few ocean liners of the early 1910s were as large as the Hamburg-American Line's *Imperator*, and this picture records a tin lithograph of her rather than the ship herself. The lithograph, by A.F. Bishop of New Haven, Connecticut, is dated 1911, a year before the liner was launched at Hamburg, so the image was a promotional design made from plans and expectations. The Detroit Publishing Company photographed the piece on a glass negative, and the record notes it was marked "Byron." The company's collection is known for documenting American and European scenes at the turn of the century, and this copy preserves a rendering of a ship that later served as a British troopship and then as the Cunard liner *Berengaria*.
