Workers stand along a line of bearing production in this 1924 glass negative, one of several Detroit Publishing Company views that the cataloger suspects were made for the Ford Motor Company. The catalog ties it to two sets of companion negatives in the same numbering run, which suggests a planned series documenting the plant rather than a single snapshot. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its color and black-and-white views of cities, industry and railroads, sold such scenes to businesses and publishers in the early twentieth century. Assembly-line work of this kind shows how mass production organized labor into repeated, divided tasks.
