Among the many portraits in the Detroit Publishing Company collection, this one stands out as a formal study of a naval officer identified only as C.B. Caldwell, captured on a 7 by 5 inch glass dry plate negative. The record dates it to sometime between 1915 and 1930, a period when the United States Navy was expanding its fleet and its officer corps after the First World War. The photographer's company traveled widely in those years, producing views for commercial sale, so portraits like this one give a rare, personal glimpse of individual service members. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
