This view records the launch of the S.S. Calcite at Wyandotte, Michigan, on March 30, 1912, a river town on the Detroit River that built vessels for Great Lakes trade. Bulk freighters of this period carried ore, coal and stone between lake ports, and shipyard launches like this one were a regular event in the region's industrial life. The image survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its broad photographic survey of American towns, rivers and industry in the early twentieth century.
