The only identifying detail this negative carries is the name J.E. Upson, and the cataloger devised even that title, so little is documented about who this subject was or what was happening in front of the camera. The plate belongs to the Detroit Publishing Company's numbered series, catalogued here as no. 16, from a firm that sold photographic views of American towns, landscapes and people to the public in the early twentieth century. Dating from between 1908 and 1920, it came to the Library of Congress in 1949 as a gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado, and its 5-by-7-inch glass format was a common size for commercial photography of that period.
