Harness gear hung in rows above the stalls, a detail that marks this view of the Gordon Pagel Co. stables in Detroit as a working space for a bakery's delivery horses. The picture was made on April 27, 1914, on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative, a format photographers of the period favored for sharp detail. Horses were still the main way bakeries moved their goods through city streets in 1914, though motor trucks were beginning to replace them. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued this view as number X 1629, recorded American city life in this era.
