Amecameca, a town on the eastern flank of the Sierra Nevada south of Mexico City, is the subject here, and this view centers on a gate opening onto its plaza. The negative is a 5 by 7 inch glass dry plate, and the attribution to photographer William Henry Jackson rests on a title match with a numbered view in his 1898 catalog, not on a signature. Jackson worked across Mexico in the 1880s and 1890s, photographing towns, churches and street life for American audiences curious about the country, and later copies of his views passed through the Detroit Publishing Company, which sold them as souvenir prints.
