Few pictures in the Detroit Publishing Company collection show an animal quite like this one: an ostrich harnessed and posed as though it were a trotting horse. The record places it, possibly, at the Florida Ostrich Farm in Jacksonville, a tourist attraction where visitors could see the birds up close and buy plumes, a popular luxury trim in the decades before 1920. The Detroit Publishing Company sold views like this one as postcards and souvenir prints to travelers, so the staged joke was meant for a public eager for novelty scenes of southern life. The glass negative, a gift to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949, preserves the image from the era when such pictures were printed in quantity.
