A line of pack mules loaded for the road is the subject here, shown approaching a town in Mexico. Mule trains called arrias or recuas carried goods across regions where rail lines had not yet reached, and they remained a common sight in rural Mexico well into the early twentieth century. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made travel views of many countries, collected negatives like this one to sell as scenic and documentary images. The catalog title was supplied by a cataloger, so the exact town and the date of exposure are not recorded.
