Few ships of its day were built for pleasure, and that is what sets the *Prinzessin Victoria Luise* apart. The Hamburg America Line launched her in 1900 as a dedicated cruise liner, and this view of a stateroom shows the comfortable private quarters that well-to-do passengers expected on voyages to northern and Mediterranean waters. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sold travel views across the country, made the 8 by 10 inch glass negative sometime between 1900 and 1910. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
