The Prinzessin Victoria Luise stands out among turn-of-the-century steamships because she was built for pleasure travel rather than only for crossing the Atlantic. The Hamburg America Line launched her in 1900 as one of the first liners designed specifically for cruising, and she took well-off passengers on voyages to Norway and the Mediterranean. This large glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented scenery, resorts, and travel destinations at home and abroad in the early 1900s. Its 8 by 10 inch format captures the hull and deck fittings in far more detail than a smaller print could.
