The *S.S. Cymric* was a White Star Line steamer built in Belfast and launched in 1897, carrying passengers and freight between Liverpool and New York in the years around 1900. This glass negative is probably from about that period, when transatlantic liners were the fastest way to cross the Atlantic and were often photographed for their size and prominence on the water. The Detroit Publishing Company sold its views to tourists and publishers across the country, which helps explain how a ship portrait like this one ended up in a Colorado collection. The record gives only an approximate date, so the exact day of the exposure is unknown.
