Here the subject is a painting rather than a place: a photograph of a canvas by Alphonse de Neuville, the French military painter known for battle scenes that were widely reproduced after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 to 1871. The title, *The Piece in Danger*, suggests an artillery gun exposed under fire, a subject Neuville returned to often. The Detroit Publishing Company photographed many artworks like this one for commercial reproduction, so the glass negative preserves the painting's composition as it reached viewers far from the original.
