Rather than a scene caught on the spot, this glass negative records a painting by the French artist Narcisse Díaz de la Peña, signed "N. Diaz," showing a group of travelers heading to a fair. Díaz de la Peña was a leading figure of the Barbizon school, and he often set figures like these in shaded woodland. The Detroit Publishing Company made photographs of artworks and scenic views like this one, so the picture preserves a canvas now held at the Museum of Fine Arts.
