Three painted panels on the walls of the Boston Public Library, titled for pastoral, dramatic, and epic poetry, are the subject here, shown in this view from the left panel. The murals are the work of French painter Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, whose soft, muted figures were meant to suit the building's reading rooms and stairways. Puvis was one of the most admired decorative painters of his day, and the library's commission, part of a broader effort to bring art into public buildings, helped make Boston a destination for those interested in mural painting. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this glass-plate negative, recorded many such interiors for travel views of the United States.
