Little is recorded about the players or the court in this outdoor tennis match, since the title was devised by the cataloger rather than taken from a contemporary caption. Lawn tennis was a popular leisure pastime in the early twentieth century, played at clubs, resorts and private grounds across the United States. The glass dry plate negative, made sometime between 1900 and 1920, came from the Detroit Publishing Company and reached the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado. Its clothing and spectators offer clues to how leisure was dressed and shared in that period.
