The Oceanside was a resort hotel on the shore at Magnolia, a village within the town of Gloucester on Cape Ann, north of Boston. This view pairs the hotel with its tennis courts, a pairing that signals how seaside resorts of the early 1900s offered organized leisure alongside sea air and bathing. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued thousands of views of American scenery and resorts, made the picture as a glass dry plate negative sometime between about 1905 and 1915. Its record also notes the plate's donation to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949, which is how it came to the Library of Congress.
