The record gives only the sitter's name, James Laughlin, with no occupation, location or caption to place him, so the portrait has to be read through its origins. It is a glass dry plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that made large numbers of images in the years around 1906 to 1910 for commercial sale. The 8 x 10 inch plate was given to the Library of Congress in 1949 by the State Historical Society of Colorado, which accounts for the Colorado connection in its notes. Large-format glass negatives of this period typically recorded fine detail, so features and clothing tend to survive with more clarity than in smaller formats.
