Taken on the west side of the grounds at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, this view shows the Mechanical Laboratory, a working building for engineering instruction set among the older campus. Thomas Jefferson founded the university in 1819 and laid out its Academical Village of pavilions, lawns and colonnades, so a practical laboratory beside that classical plan makes an interesting contrast. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made large glass-plate views of American towns and campuses in the early 1900s, produced the picture.
