Morro Castle, the stone fort guarding the entrance to Havana harbor, is the setting for this view of the American flag being raised on January 1, 1899. That date marked the start of the American military occupation of Cuba after the Spanish-American War, and the flag over the fort signaled the end of Spanish control of the island. The picture is a glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that sold views of places across the country and abroad. The catalog notes that the title was assigned by a cataloger and that some details remain unverified.
