Few photographs from the Detroit Publishing Company show Miami's early residential life as directly as this glass-plate view of homes along Bay Boulevard. The Detroit Publishing Company, based in Detroit, sold large numbers of views of American towns, resorts and landscapes, and it sent photographers across the country to document them in the years around 1900 and 1915. Miami was then a young city, having been incorporated only in 1896 after the railroad extended south to the Miami River, so its street scenes capture a community still defining itself. The 8 by 10 inch glass negative gives the image a sharpness that later prints from the company's catalog could not always match.
