The Tuna Club clubhouse in Avalon, on Santa Catalina Island off the Southern California coast, was a gathering place for the sportfishing crowd that made the island famous in the early twentieth century. Anglers came from across the country to hook giant bluefin tuna in the channel, and the club's members were among the wealthy sportsmen who helped turn Avalon into a resort town. This glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which produced thousands of views of American scenery and towns between about 1900 and 1915, often for promotional use by railroads and travel interests. The catalog notes that the title was assigned by a cataloger and that the image was identified later, so the exact vantage point and street scene are worth checking against the picture itself.
